Back-to-School STEM & Learning Event

On August 21, 2026, Yemenia Women & Families Association hosted a free Back-to-School STEM & Learning Event for children and families in Calgary.

The event brought together children, parents, community organizations, newcomer-support services, and local partners for an afternoon focused on learning, connection, creativity, and community support.

A Day of Learning and Community Connection

Our community partners provided valuable information and interactive experiences for families:

* Calgary Police Service delivered an educational presentation and opened a booth where children and families could meet officers, ask questions, and learn about safety and community services.
* Immigrant Services Calgary provided a booth with information and resources to help newcomers navigate services and settle in Calgary.
* Hangar Flight Museum introduced children to aviation through an interactive community booth and educational activities.
* Calgary Food Bank joined the event and connected families experiencing food insecurity with information about available support.
* ActionDignity delivered a presentation on children’s rights at school and provided families with information and resources through their booth.
* UCMAS Westbrook brought math games, competitions, and special discount opportunities for children.

Creative Kids Corner

A special part of the event was our Creative Kids Corner, where children became creators, presenters, scientists, performers, and young leaders.

Children:

* Wrote, illustrated, and presented their own stories.
* Led creative craft activities.
* Prepared and presented four science experiments.
* Built a cardboard car powered by a battery.
* Built a LEGO car powered by a battery.
* Taught other children a yarn activity.
* Performed a play on stage.
* Presented a Taekwondo demonstration.

Rather than simply attending, our children actively contributed to the event by creating, teaching, experimenting, presenting, and leading.

Supporting Children and Families

As part of our Back-to-School support, we distributed:

* 20 school backpacks
* 65 school supply kits
* 30 coloring sets
* 100 educational books about farming, agriculture, and soil
* 150 bags of chips
* 150 juice boxes
* 40 meat skewers for adult guests, in addition to the community potluck

Building Confidence, Connection & Leadership

The event was designed not only to prepare children for the new school year, but also to create a space where children could discover their abilities, build confidence, learn from the community, and share their own talents.

We are grateful to all of our partners, volunteers, families, and community members who contributed their time, knowledge, resources, and energy to make this event possible.

Together, we are building a stronger, more connected, and more confident community.
